How CS2 Trade Ups Work

A trade up contract in CS2 allows you to sacrifice 10 skins of the same rarity tier and receive 1 skin of the next higher rarity tier. The key mechanic is that the outcome is determined by the collections your input skins belong to. If all 10 inputs come from one collection, your outcome will be one of that collection's next-tier skins, chosen at random with equal probability.

When inputs span multiple collections, the probability is split proportionally. For example, if 7 inputs are from Collection A and 3 from Collection B, Collection A's outcomes collectively receive 70% probability and Collection B's outcomes receive 30%, each split evenly among that collection's available outcomes at the target tier.

This makes trade ups a strategic tool. By carefully choosing which collections and skins you input, you can weight the probability toward desirable (and valuable) outcomes while minimizing exposure to low-value results.

Understanding Trade Up Expected Value

Expected value (EV) is the average return you would receive if you performed the same trade up thousands of times. It is calculated by multiplying each possible outcome's probability by its market value and summing the results. A profitable trade up has an EV higher than the total cost of the 10 input skins.

Most random trade ups have negative EV because Mil-Spec and Restricted tier skins typically increase only modestly in value at the next tier. However, certain collections contain high-value skins at specific rarities, creating opportunities for positive-EV trade ups when input costs are low enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CS2 trade up?

A trade up contract lets you exchange 10 skins of the same rarity for 1 skin of the next rarity tier. The outcome depends on which collections the input skins belong to.

How does trade up probability work?

Each input skin contributes a 10% weight toward its collection. Outcomes are drawn from the next rarity tier of each collection represented, weighted by how many inputs belong to that collection.

Is trading up profitable?

Trade ups can be profitable if you carefully select inputs with low cost and high-value potential outcomes. Most random trade ups lose money on average, but targeted trade ups with good collection selection can yield positive expected value.
